Use of Extended Screwdriver Bits

The SD/SDV-Series tool is designed for use with standard 50 mm screwdriver bits.

Longer bits (e.g. 70 mm, 89 mm, and 152 mm) may be used, but require special consideration.

Mechanical Considerations

Longer bits increase the distance between the tool and the screw.

This may result in:

  • Increased run-out (radial deviation)

  • Reduced positioning accuracy

  • Increased sensitivity to misalignment

Note

The risk of run-out increases significantly with bit length.

For long bits, additional mechanical support may be required, such as:

  • Guide bushings

  • External support bearings

  • Alignment fixtures

Important

It is the responsibility of the integrator to ensure acceptable run-out and alignment when using extended bits.

Application Benefits

Extended bits may be beneficial in applications where:

  • Screws are located deep inside a product

  • Additional clearance is required for the robot or tool body

Safety Shield Considerations

The SD/SDV-Series safety system requires a safety shield that covers the screwdriver bit.

When using extended bits:

  • A custom safety shield must be designed and implemented

  • The safety shield must fully cover the exposed bit in collaborative applications

Important

The stroke of the safety shield remains unchanged (55 mm).

The safety shield travel cannot be increased.

Limitations

Using longer bits does not increase the allowable screw length.

Warning

Extending the safety shield length alone is not sufficient.

If the screw extends beyond the safety shield travel, the screw cannot be properly released or driven.

Integration Responsibility

Important

When using extended bits, the integrator is responsible for:

  • Ensuring proper mechanical stability

  • Minimizing run-out

  • Designing a compliant safety shield

  • Verifying safe operation of the system

All modifications must be validated as part of the system risk assessment.
